Big shots on a short fuse

Starry tantrums are not new. BT takes a look at some crabby celebs

Sir Elton John has just blamed his infamous temper on his creativity. Temper tantrums and bad behaviour are not new to Hollywood, Bollywood, the literati and chatterati. Recently when Nobel Laureate Sir VS Naipaul visited Bangalore, his wife Lady Nadira, a former journalist herself, gave media people a hard time. "She was rude and brusque and did not allow me to meet him," says one young writer who was almost reduced to tears after her encounter with Lady Nadira.

British supermodel Naomi Campbell is also known to throw unbelievably bad temper tantrums. Australian actor, Russell Crowe''s infamous temper is no secret.

Southern superstar Kamalhaasan is known for being prickly with the press and the public. In the Kannada film industry actors Sudeep and Ramya are said to be usually on a short fuse. Deepti Naval is reported to have thrown tantrums during the shooting of Freaky Chakra with a beautician who''d been working with her.

Some musicians and dancers too give people, particularly event managers and organisers, a hard time. Pandit Jasraj, it is reported, does not disclose his itinerary and schedule to the sponsors and organisers of the programmes he is to take part in, often leaving them confused and in despair. Both Sonal Mansingh and Padma Subramaniam are known to be ‘difficult'' before performances. Pandit Ravi Shankar is said to constantly complain about the lights and sound when he''s on stage.

"Generally South Indian artistes are well behaved," says an event manager, adding, "They are more subtle and diplomatic."

Psychotherapist Santa Kumar says out that such people don''t have mastery over their emotions. "They tend to be acutely self-centred and suffer from narcissism. This leads to insensitivity and a lack of empathy for others." Santa Kumar points out that some celebs are very kind and sensitive. "Creativity is absolutely no justification for poor behaviour. It makes people victims of their own creativity. Celebs can and do wield power and influence and it is up to them how they use it."

Temper tantrums and bad behaviour are not restricted to the rich and the famous alone, but since they get so much attention their behaviour is more conspicuous. Besides, they think they can get away with it, adds Santa Kumar.
sangeeta_cavale@indiatimes.com
